Have you ever
thought about what are the contents of all the cosmetic products we use? Do we
pay attention to the labels, the information printed with small letters, do we
fully understand what the contents’ names mean and how they affect our
well-being? We constantly see advertisements about facial serums containing
Hyaluronic and Ferulic acid, but what exactly are those contents and are they
actually healthy for our skin?
It is extremely modern nowadays to talk about
bio, eco and organic ingredients, preservatives, UV-filters, etc.. Do we have a
reason to be worried or is everything just a scam? Here is the list of the most
commonly used ingredients and how they affect our body:
Hyaluronic acid
– this is the most common ingredient. Hyaluronic acid, which actually is a
component of the connective tissue, can hold up to 1000 times its own weight in
water. It is used for hydrating the skin and reducing wrinkles.
Salicylic acid –
this ingredient is suitable for people with oily skin, it helps with
exfoliation and the cleansing of the face. Although it is an acid, it is
responsible for the freshness and the beauty of the skin.
Hydroquinone–
this element is used in creams with skin bleaching purposes. Some time ago this
content was used for the lightening of hyper-pigmentation, but after a while it
was deemed to be cancerous and its production was discontinued. Today, the
opinions about it are very controversial. According to some people, it is
considered to be a golden standard in the bleaching of dark spots and they
believe it is harmless. By all means in needs to be used for a short period of
time.
Hamamelis – this
ingredient is used for hydration and rejuvenation of the sun-damaged skin. It
is entirely natural and is ideal for women with oily skin – it makes the skin
more smooth and glowing.
Retinoids – also
known as Vitamin A, they are used for anti-aging products. They fight wrinkles,
support the renewal of the skin cells and they can even decrease the size of the
oil glands. If you have large pores or lifeless skin, look for products with
this ingredient.
Alfa-hydroxy
acids – most commonly can be found in products for skincare. Those are acids
extracted from fruits and milk and they exfoliate and rejuvenate the skin. If
you have used a product with this ingredient it is essential to use
sun-protective cream.
Peptides –
whenever the elasticity of your skin is reduced, peptides restore its natural
condition. They can visibly reduce the wrinkles and to smooth out dry and rough
skin. You can find peptides within the sections for anti-aging products and for
lip care (lip balms, lip glosses, lipsticks)
Silicone –
silicone is the most frequently used element in beauty products. The silicone
helps with the defense of the skin and can even aid in the disappearance of
visible scars!
Glycerin –
glycerin is regularly used in the production of soaps, as well as other
products in the skincare industry. It has a hydrating effect and improves the
balancing of the water retention and prevents skin drying. Glycerin is also
suitable for those who have eczemas, skin rashes or itchiness on the skin.
Jojoba oil –
Jojoba oil is plant oil and its use is very widely spread within the cosmetic
products sector. It can be used on its own or as a valuable component of
hydrating products (Hyaluronic acid). The jojoba oil is easily absorbed by the
skin and is perfect for protecting the skin from harsh climate conditions and
in cold days.
